Toe Up Work Socks with a TwistIt has been a long time since I have posted anything. Part of the reason for this is that I haven’t really been doing anything craft-related lately. Instead I have been engrossed in the Vorkosigan Saga, which I regret not having read before. This is a series that is definitely not run-of-the mill and has hooked me from the first chapter of the first book that I read.

Last week I received the first shipment from my subscription to the Ram Club The yarn was so nice that I couldn’t wait to start knitting it into socks. Last night I finished the first sock and started the second.

The included pattern is fun to work and has taught me a couple of things. This is the first time that I have knit with two strands of yarn. I like the results as it gives more depth to the color of the sock. I also enjoyed knitting gussets and a heal flap in reverse as I knit from the toe up.

The only change that I made to the pattern is that I used a short row toe a la Priscilla Gibson Roberts. I prefer using yarn overs at the beginning of each short row instead of wrapping the next stitch. I think that the toe looks much better that way.

The sock fits my foot perfectly and feels wonderful. I can’t wait to have a pair.

O Jerusalem as of 19 June 2008I have officially stopped following my rotation. Or it would probably be more accurate to say that my rotation has changed. I skipped Noah’s Ark and plan on skipping Our Family as well. I just can’t stand to even think of working on them at this time. Maybe I’ll feel differently the next time that they come around.

O Jerusalem can be a little daunting because there are huge patches of it that are basically the same color. I have to confess that I had a hard time starting work on it because it seemed a little boring. However, as areas started to fill up I was excited by how good they looked. I felt compelled to continue stitching so that I could see other parts fill in. There is still a long ways to go before this really starts to look like something, though. At the rate I am going I sometimes wonder if I will live to see it finished.

Rocky Point as of 27 May 2008It feels good to be cross stitching again. It is also amazing to me how quickly ten hours of work can go by. It doesn’t look like I have really accomplished all that much in that amount of time. All that I have really done is complete a couple of rocks in the lower left hand corner.

Those rocks look good in real life, but they look much better in the photograph. I think that the camera blends the colors together a little more and makes the rocks more life-like. Now I can see the logic behind where there are light and dark colors. I can see the shadows cast by the setting sun. I can see the seams and cracks and uneven texture of the rocks. I like the result so much that I want to spend even more time on this piece so that I can see other features come to life.

In all honesty, I think that my patience for stitching with black is starting to run out (I have never seen a piece that uses as much black as this one does), but I am also very tempted to skip over the next piece in my rotation. The thought of working on Noah’s Ark is dispiriting. I don’t want to do any more over-one animals that take forever to stitch such a small area. I want to continue working on big landscape pictures. Maybe I’ll skip to O Jerusalem instead.

Merry Christmas A to Z as of 5 May 2008As I look back over my archives, I am embarrassed to realize that it has been over a year since I last posted anything about this project. The last few months have been filled with more knitting and crocheting than stitching. As a result my cross stitch projects have been neglected.

Part of the reason for this is probably that I have felt blocked with this piece (no pun intended). The carolers really caused me problems for some reason and the snowman is stitched with blending filament. I have come to dread blending filament. If I stitch with floss and filament together the filament always seems to work itself behind the floss so that it doesn’t really do anything. My solution to that problem is to stitch with floss and then stitch with blending filament over the top of the last leg of the cross stitches. This leaves me with a feeling that I am covering ground that has already been covered and I feel like I am not accomplishing anything.

I am glad that I finally sat down and finished these two blocks. Now I can say that I have stitched from A(ngel) to P(resents). I think that next time I will work on the header before I start working on any of the other letters.

PaperBack Swap and BookMooch have given me an opportunity to empty my bookshelves of unwanted books. Unfortunately, they have also allowed me to fill those shelves up again with books that I feel obligated to read. So many books…so little time.

Fatigue

It seems that every year when the temperatures start to rise I start having trouble sleeping. The past couple of weeks have been especially hard on me. I have been consistently waking up at 3:00 and I have been unable to go back to sleep. By the end of the day I am so tired that the thought of stitching or knitting isn’t even attractive. It is much easier to get the kids to bed, read a book, and fall asleep at an extremely early hour, which unfortunately makes it likely that I will be awake at 3:00 the next morning.

When I read about The Ram Club on Ravelry, I couldn’t resist signing up. This is the first time I have signed up for something like this. I’m already excited to see what will be coming in the mail.

Working with my own design and ideas has definitely been an interesting experience. It requires taking a leap into the unknown followed by a willingness to start over and make adjustments if things don’t turn out quite like you had envisioned. I am not quite sure that I have the temperament to do this.

To review, I am knitting a sock for my son using a stranded pattern that I took from Knitting Workshop. When I decided to do this, I was a little worried that there would be too many rows in the pattern for the sock. To compensate for this, I decided to knit from the toe up thinking that I could put the heel where it belonged and then just have an extra-long sock.

Yesterday as I approached the end of the pattern, I decided that the sock was all out of proportion and I still had to knit the ribbing for the cuff. This sock was so long that it looked like it would eventually reach over the top of my son’s knee. There are also a couple of bands in the pattern that look a little strange to my eye. My son has also mentioned that they don’t look quite right to him either.

After a few minutes deliberation, I decided to rip back to the heel so that I could take out the two offending bands. My wife thought that I was nuts for doing this and a part of me agreed with her, but I think that the sock will look much better in this new configuration.

I had hoped that with all of the knitting time I had this weekend I would have pictures to show. Now the sock only has about four more rows than it did on Friday night. This setback coupled with the prospect of having to knit the same pattern a second (and eventually a third) time has made this project a little less attractive to me. I may have to let things sit for a little while.

Besides, my cross stitch projects started calling to me yesterday morning.

I was a little leery about upgrading this site to WordPress 2.5. I am glad I did. The admin interface is such an improvement. It puts me in more of a mood to blog.

Lincoln Memorial to Washington MonumentA couple of weeks ago we spent Spring Break in the Washington, DC area. My wife and kids have never been there before, so it was a new experience for them. We walked for many miles and managed to see the Capitol, the monuments, some of the Smithsonian exhibits, Mount Vernon, and the National Zoo. We even made a quick trip to Philadelphia to see Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, and Valley Forge.

It seemed like the wind blew the whole time we were there and we about froze to death. It is amazing how a few years of living in the deserts of the Southwest can make temperatures in the forties and fifties feel intolerably cold. When we arrived home late on Easter Sunday it was a relief to be outside and feel a warm spring breeze and temperatures in the seventies. The kids were exhausted, but glad to have had the opportunity to see so many neat things.

We have spent the last couple of weeks trying to recover from our vacation. This has left little time for anything of a crafty nature. So there isn’t much to show. I have knit half of a sock for my son, who is eager to point out that he is the last child to not have a pair of hand-knit socks. He wanted socks knit in two colors and I had a sudden inspiration to try something a little different. Things are working out so far, but I have this lurking fear that the finished product is going to fall flat, mainly because this is my first foray into knitting my own design. I guess we’ll see what happens.

I should have plenty of knitting time this weekend, so a finished product is really not that far away.
